I vividly remember nuclear drills in elementary school, everybody heading into the basement at the siren, as though that would save us. armageddon was much more prevalent then as an idea than now I believe, even with all that has occurred
Music was better back in the day, kids played the sport in season rather than all the club/comp world of a single sport yr round. A bit of “get off my lawn”; no gardening yet here in AK…
Just catching up to these notes which I very much enjoyed reading!
I was ten. Those were the duck and cover days of sputnik. JFK was young and brilliant. The Dodgers moved to LA. Girls were mysterious creatures. Boys played sports. Be home before dark.
A huge difference only we who grew up in the 20th century can appreciate was the merciful lack of information. Seven TV channels: 3 networks, 3 local and Channel 13 whenever that started ...maybe the 60s. The press was national and local ... if anything of international importance was happening it was on TV at 7:00 PM with Cronkite or Huntley and Brinkley and it stayed there. Children were not taught fear and diversity. We were taught trust and respect. When I took tests in grade school the teachers left the room. The honor system.
We actually did not have race riots until the 90s that I can recall. We had freedom marches and protests in the 60s at which all races apart from the deep south (and Archie Bunker lol), passionately supported in our writing, music and culture...especially university students. Ironically our music is as popular today as it was when we were young.
My family like almost everyone's family was my guard rails that kept me on the right side of the road. And my boyhood heroes. Maris Mantle Reggie... I love it that Trump put in a good word for Pete Rose. I suppose little leaguers still sleep with their glove under their pillow, too.
Of course I will be watching the astronauts. Thanks for memories guys.., and the link Dave.
There were aspects of the 70s that I wouldn't trade for the present day. I grew up during that decade, the Cold War was still chilly, rumors of Armageddon lent themselves to nuclear war nightmares. Watched motionless as a mushroom cloud billowed on the horizon one summer day. They'd finally done it, but odd that there was no flash. Turns out that Mt St Helens was blowing off some steam, hidden over the horizon. I'd assumed the worst. Here's to brighter days!
70F today, 80F tomorrow... great weather to get away from the endless candles. Enjoy, JJ. Thx.
ty sir...

Definite race riots in NJ. My parents lived there at the time. My mom's views match what Derek said above. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Newark_riots.

Found another candidate site to watch the touchdown. Looks like a legit channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zO4tgtZs9U
