We must be cut from very similar cloth, as this missive made the hairs on the back of my neck bristle and a flood of early year memories come flooding back from vaults that I thought were sealed forever or whose keys had been lost in the mists of time.
My Doctor was Dr. Eliasβ¦.Rockville Centre, NY. Total Legend.
Thanks for your ability to go from ice-cold, steely market observations to the most touching of personal experiences.
Oi -- I put in hay in 1970- 74 for .73 cents/hr in Western PA and would dive into the local swimming hole fully clothed at the day's end to get the chaff off and cool off. 25 cents was a while before then I guess, or you were underpaid.
I took the vaccine when available at first, but my MD suggested skipping the boosters, so I did. Had covid last May and it wasn't terrible. Caught some upper respiratory bug (negative for covid)
in September and it lingered for months! Age matters in the immune response regardless of the pathogen I believe - and getting older isn't for sissies.
Perhaps the more salient question is -- What are you going to do when the next avian flu makes the leap? Freeze dried food, firearms and a generator? Pretty good odds that at some point we see this movie again.......
I put in hay for Gene Harding, and when his hay mow spontaneously combusted on night, my mom drove me out to help milk the entire herd - by hand. no vacuum system. And me & my friend Bill W take it one day at a time, too. regards
I think many of us grew up under much less medical scrutiny, for better and sometimes, for worse. Weβve all heard or read about how we are absolutely over-diagnosed for every ailment in the book these days. Not necessarily for the better. IMO.
Not here for a debate re:vaccines just an anecdote of my own.
First, Iβd never heard the shot prevented Covid, just lessened the symptoms. Your mileage may vary.
As for the anecdote, it comes from my better 1/2 who works in a hospital. A father in his 50βs refused the shot. He was as healthy as the horses he raised on his farm. His family chose the same, for religious reasons, if I have the story correct. He got Covid. Might have briefly had a word with his Maker before finally recovering, and getting off the ventilator.
The whole family was in line with their sleeves rolled up before he was discharged. Your mileage .. etc.
Coincidentally, I have Covid too. Had it in July as well. Both times less severe than the first, and not too bad at all. This time the mildest.
Hi Leslie, as always, an insightful reply!! I didn't mean to be provocative about covid, just a bit of casual chat actually. I'm a boomer with millennial kids. I love them but they drive me nuts. I think a lot of people don't know what it was like a very short time ago and I was writing wistfully about it... and thankfully glad that I do. As I said I'm getting used to it.
I'm just getting over Covid for the second time. It lasts 5 days both times. No boosters for me. My nephew got his booster in September, has Covid and he's suffering mightily. Maybe it affects people differently, but boosters seem to be a non factor.
Missed your missives, good to know you are better.
Could chip in being a regular at the ER at the local hospital. We were 6 children, living in the countryside, my mother was somehow very chill taking me to hospital, never for superficial scratches. As you, it happens, nothing compared to the sucide of my best mate, that rattled the cage.
It is always a pleasure to read your thoughts Derek. Thank you, sir.
Oh Mate!

Fantastic!
Keep Going.

Hey Brian. Dr. Elias... I got the same feeling writing it! Sometimes these things just write themselves and I'm the reader.
a simpler time, and better in some ways
Living until they died while lucid is a blessing.
How beautiful!

Hey Buck. I hayed for Louie Fitzgerald in the mid 60s. I could still get silver dollars at the bank... As for the future, one day at time, sir.

JJ, I was born in 2002, I can't help but feel envious of the times your generation grew up in. Thank you for writing this.
Yw sriva. These times today will be the times you share with those who follow you tomorrow... and they will be envious of you!
Great story. They don't make em like they used to!

All the best over the Festive week everyone.
There is much to be thankful for.

Leslie, you must be serenely isolated from social media! And even regular news, considering the following is a compilation from those sources:

I guess?
Cheers.
Exactly how I took your musings.
Great story and well written, youβre setting the bar high sir, no slacking now. π
My own note was written in the same spirit. We can let others, with evidently more time to βspareβ, debate Covid and its myriad ramifications.
All the best.

Yup, that sounds a lot like my childhood.
Thanks Martin. I appreciate the good wishes. Sorry about your friend. Happy thanksgiving sir.
Heart warming thoughts. Nice.
